Causes
The exact cause of Borderline Personality Disorder is unknown, however, psychologist believe it is caused by a combination of genetics, environment, and brain abnormalities.
Genetics- Twin studies show that BPD may be inherited, or associated with other mental disorders among family members.
Environment- Many people with BPD have a history of child abuse, or being separated from caregivers or loved ones.
Brain Abnormalities- Research shows that the brains of people with BPD show changes in areas associated with anger and aggression. Also, their serotonin levels are off. (1)
